Juba BanksA villa enclave embedded in a hill
Juba Banks is located on Juba Sound, Turks and Caicos Islands. The rental villa development features 4no. 3-bed homes that have been designed to sit sensitively on a steeply sloping site whilst optimising views of the sea and the sound.
The villas are highly visible on the approach road that skirts the sound. We ensured that they did not appear as a wall of accommodation by skewing each of the villas at 30˚ to the road line. This also aligned with the best views and the prevailing winds.
All elevations of the buildings are highly visible as the road winds up the hill to the individual entrances. We carefully orchestrated the homes to step in plan and section up the hill so as to create a constantly transforming ensemble that provides interest and intrigue.
Each villa is composed of a two storey block containing the bedrooms, and a single storey block containing the Grand Room. Entry is from the higher part of the hill, so that each villa appears as a single storey volume, allowing a greater appreciation of the backdrop of the sound.
Two guest bedrooms flank the central hallway with framed views of the sound. Steps descend to the Grand Room, and the transition from 9’ to 13’ high ceilings enhances the dramatic view to the pool and sound beyond. On descent, a stair is contained in a glazed link with views of a lush pocket courtyard garden between the two blocks.
On the upper floor the Master Suite enjoys views of the sound and glimpses of the sea to the east. There is also a full width roof terrace atop the Grand Room, with panoramic views, where the sound can be enjoyed in both sun and shade.
The homes step in plan and section up the hill, so as to create a constantly transforming ensemble.
